About our Speech and Language Therapy Services

Speech and language therapy is a relatively new field in Kuwait and the Middle East. Yet, the important role this field plays in rehabilitative healthcare is quickly becoming apparent, especially as awareness and understanding of its significant benefits increases.

We at FSRI are proud to be one of the forerunners of speech and language therapy in the region. Our Speech and Language Therapy Department offers a wide range of services with a focus on individual therapy. However, group therapy and family support is also provided as and when needed.

Our speech therapists have distinguished themselves in the region, by implementing a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. They collaborate with physicians, nurses, psychologists, audiologists, physical and occupational therapists, educators and parents to ensure that provide an optimally comprehensive rehabilitation approach and offer holistic speech therapy treatment programs.

Our team works with patients of all age - from infants to children to adults to elderly – diagnosing and treating disorders that affect expressive and receptive language, speech and swallowing. Following assessment of their specific condition, our clinicians work with patients on the management, intervention and treatment of a number of disorders and conditions in the following areas:

  • Speech, including articulation, fluency, phonation, resonance and voice
  • Language, including receptive and expressive language phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, language processing, pre-literacy and phonological awareness
  • Cognition, including attention memory, problem solving and executive functions
  • Dysphagia (swallowing), including chewing, swallowing delay and aspiration
  • Voice disorders, both organic and functional
  • Sensory awareness, for communication and dysphagia
  • Motor speech disorders (dysarthria apraxia)
  • Aphasia
  • Anomia (naming difficulties)

Our department works with clients who present a range of issues, including:

  • Genetic disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders and down syndrome
  • Developmental delay
  • Craniofacial anomalies such as cleft palate
  • Language delay
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Stroke
  • Laryngectomies
  • Tracheostomies
  • Stuttering
  • Parkinson's Disease

Assessments are performed following a screening process and an initial interview. This allows for a more individualized treatment plan to be developed, which is agreed upon by both the speech therapists and the patient or caregiver. Follow-up sessions are also provided to ensure proper generalization and maintenance of target behaviors.
